Israel Forms 'Shadow Command' in Preparation for Scenario of Eliminating Its Military Leaders

In an unprecedented move, the Israeli newspaper 'Yedioth Ahronoth' revealed the formation of the Israeli army's secret 'Shadow Staff' aimed at ensuring the continuity of military leadership in case its senior leaders are assassinated or injured. This step came as part of preparations for 'Operation Rising Sun,' which targeted prominent Iranian leaders in a 12-day war last month.
This secret body is based in a fortified and isolated facility away from traditional communication networks to avoid any electronic penetration or physical attacks. It includes Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Tamir Yadai, along with a number of senior reserve officers, and it officially began its work on June 13 in conjunction with the start of Israeli strikes on Iran.
Prior to activation, the body conducted intensive training for its members, who were briefed on the full military plans to confront Tehran. This precautionary measure comes amid escalating Iranian threats, as Iran attempted to target Israeli command centers during the war using precision missiles and drones, without being able to cripple the Israeli army's leadership capabilities.
On another front, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz revealed new details about the operation named 'Operation Blue Year,' indicating that it began with a preemptive strike on June 12 that thwarted an Iranian attack in preparation. He also mentioned that the planning for the operation dates back to November 2023, when a limited operation was decided to be carried out against the Fordo nuclear facility under the name 'Operation Blue and White.'
The military confrontation between the two countries witnessed a significant escalation, with Israel conducting intensive strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, while Iran retaliated by targeting Israeli facilities, before the United States declared a ceasefire on June 24. These developments demonstrate Israel's readiness for the worst-case scenarios in a conflict characterized by possibilities of rapid escalation.
