Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the decision of the three European countries _France, Germany, and Britain_ to activate the trigger mechanism related to the nuclear agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 is a provocative and inappropriate act, stressing that Tehran will take appropriate measures in response to this decision.
In a phone call with the EU's foreign policy chief and coordinator of the nuclear agreement committee, Josep Borrell, Araghchi pointed out that activating this mechanism increases doubts about the true intentions of the European countries towards Iran, complicates the diplomatic path, and makes it more difficult to continue the dialogue.
For her part, Borrell emphasized the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the nuclear crisis, expressing her readiness to facilitate the dialogue process between the two sides, and called for continued communication and consultation to ensure that diplomacy remains the primary option.
Meanwhile, the three European countries officially announced yesterday, Thursday, that they have informed the UN Security Council of their decision to activate the trigger mechanism and reimpose international sanctions on Iran, amid rising tensions over the Iranian nuclear program.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stated that activating this mechanism comes because "the nuclear escalation should not proceed," but he affirmed in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that this action "does not mean the end of diplomacy," pointing out that the three countries are determined to use the thirty-day period provided by the mechanism to open the door for dialogue with Iran.
This decision comes ahead of a scheduled UN Security Council meeting on Friday to discuss the decision to activate the reimposition of sanctions, while Russia and China have prepared a draft resolution calling for the extension of the Iranian nuclear agreement.
This escalation comes at a time when the Iranian parliament is discussing the possibility of withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which complicates the international scene regarding the Iranian file.
