Iranian official media reported today that Tehran warned an American destroyer on Wednesday, demanding it to change its course after it approached waters monitored by the Islamic Republic, prompting the American ship to move away.
The incident comes after American strikes last month on Iranian nuclear facilities that Washington says are part of a program aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Tehran insists that its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes.
Iranian state television said: "The American destroyer (Fitzgerald) attempted to approach waters under Iranian control in a provocative step," adding that a Navy helicopter quickly approached the destroyer and issued a stern warning demanding it to leave the area.
The official television mentioned that the American destroyer threatened the Iranian helicopter, but it left the area after the continuous warning.
