The International Court of Justice rejected today, Monday, the lawsuit filed by Sudan against the United Arab Emirates, accusing it of fueling genocide in Darfur by supplying weapons to the Rapid Support Forces, citing lack of jurisdiction. Sudan argued before the UN court last month that the UAE violated the Genocide Convention by supporting the Rapid Support Forces in Darfur, but the UAE stated that the case had no basis. The court on Monday acknowledged the UAE's submissions, rejected Sudan's request for urgent measures, and ordered the case to be removed from its records. The court's decision summary stated that due to lack of jurisdiction, "the court is prohibited under its statute from taking any position on the substantive merits of the accusations made by Sudan." The UAE praised the International Court of Justice's decision and described it as a victory. The court, with 14 votes to 2, rejected Sudan's request for an order for urgent measures to prevent acts of genocide against the Masalit tribe. This tribe has been subjected to intense attacks with ethnic motives by the Rapid Support Forces and Arab militias loyal to them. Sudan accuses the UAE of arming the Rapid Support Forces, which are fighting the Sudanese army in a civil war that has been ongoing for about two years. The UAE denies the allegations, but UN experts and American lawmakers find these accusations credible.
