The military tension escalation between India and Pakistan has led to widespread disruption in civil aviation in the region, with many Asian airlines announcing the cancellation or modification of their flight routes to and from Europe to avoid Pakistani airspace. This came after India launched an attack on the Pakistani side of Kashmir, and Islamabad responded by downing five Indian fighter jets, marking the most intense military escalation between the two neighbors in over 20 years. According to flight tracking data, more than 20 commercial flights have changed their routes to avoid flying over Pakistani airspace, while 52 flights were canceled by Wednesday morning local time. Taiwanese airline "EVA Air" announced the modification of its European routes for safety reasons, impacting the company's stock which dropped by 1.7%. Similarly, South Korean airline "Korean Air" changed its flight route between Seoul and Dubai to a southern route passing through Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India instead of crossing over Pakistan. Thai Airways confirmed that changing its routes to Europe and South Asia could lead to delays. Vietnamese Airlines and Taiwanese-owned Chinese airlines also announced the impact of the ongoing tension on their operations. The effects of this escalation on international air traffic are expected to continue until the confrontations subside or a de-escalation is reached, amid growing concerns of the tension spreading to broader economic sectors in the region.
