The British newspaper "The Times" reported that senior Hamas leaders residing in the Qatari capital, Doha, were asked to hand over their personal weapons as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement.
The newspaper mentioned that among the leaders asked to surrender their weapons were Khalil al-Hayya, head of the negotiating team in the movement, Zaher Jabarin, the financial official and the one in charge of the file related to the West Bank, in addition to Mohammed Ismail Darwish, known as "Abu Omar Hassan", who heads the Shura Council in the movement and leads political delegations to countries like Turkey and Iran.
According to the newspaper, Khalil al-Hayya, who is responsible for the prisoner exchange negotiations, fears for his life after Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz indirectly threatened him, indicating that he may be the next target on the Israeli assassination list.
Sources close to al-Hayya also indicated that his fears have influenced his stance in the negotiations, as he recently expressed readiness to accept the latest agreement draft and abandon positions long held by the movement, including rejecting a temporary ceasefire and insisting on a comprehensive deal. The same sources mentioned that Qatar's request for him to surrender his personal weapon and that of his escorts heightened his sense of danger and increased the likelihood of him accepting the proposed agreement.
