U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Monday, that he will place the Washington D.C. police department under federal control, and the National Guard will be deployed in the city, indicating that this move aims to restore order in the capital.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump said: "I am officially activating Section (740) of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, you know what that means, and I am placing the Washington D.C. police department under direct federal control."
Trump explained to reporters that his actions come because "there is something that has gone out of control, but we will bring it back under control very quickly, as we did at the southern border."
He added: "I am deploying the National Guard to help re-establish law and order and public safety in Washington D.C., and they will be allowed to do their job properly."
