In collaboration with UNESCO.. Launch of an urgent project to rehabilitate the National Museum in Damascus

The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), announced the launch of an urgent and comprehensive project to rehabilitate the National Museum in the capital, Damascus.

The project statement mentioned that its immediate objectives include "improving security systems in the museum, updating storage and documentation systems for at-risk collections, in addition to digitizing Syrian documentary heritage to ensure its preservation and ease of access at both local and global levels."

The project also focuses on the educational aspect, as it works to "enhance the educational role of the museum by implementing awareness and training programs to engage students in heritage preservation and civic education," as part of broader efforts "to safeguard Syrian cultural heritage and revive the role of the museum as a center of knowledge and culture."

The project aims, in its long-term vision, to "place the museum among important international cultural institutions," emphasizing "enhancing local community engagement, especially students, in awareness and heritage preservation activities." This step reaffirms the core message of the Directorate of Antiquities in "transmitting Syria's rich civilization to future generations."
