An informed source in the Iranian government confirmed that the entry of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors into Iran was based on a decision by the Iranian National Security Council to monitor the fuel replacement at the Bushehr nuclear power plant, emphasizing that no final text for the new cooperation framework has been adopted yet.
The source explained that Iranian law requires all requests for cooperation with the agency to be referred to the National Security Council to ensure the protection of the country's interests, and that any steps related to fuel replacement or cooperation are carried out within this legal framework.
In this context, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, pointed out that Iran is a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and must be subject to international oversight, adding that the first group of inspectors has returned to Iran and negotiations are currently underway on mechanisms to resume nuclear activities.
This comes amid internal controversy in the Iranian parliament, where hardline lawmakers criticized allowing inspectors to enter without prior approval from the Supreme National Security Council, while Europeans are considering activating the snapback mechanism to ensure monitoring of any potential violations.
