Head of the National Commission for Transitional Justice: Justice in Syria will not be retaliatory but based on revealing the truth, accountability, and preventing impunity.

In a statement published by the commission's official account today, Friday, Abdul Latif said: "On December 8, 2024, Syria regained its freedom, and its people reclaimed their dignity, first by the grace of God, then by the determination of the free Syrians and their sincere national leadership. Since that day, the process of building a modern Syrian state has begun, based on the values of equal citizenship and a unified society."
Abdul Latif added: "On February 25, 2025, the National Dialogue Conference adopted a recommendation to launch the transitional justice process in response to popular demands. On March 13 of the same year, the constitutional declaration came to confirm this direction, where Article 49 stipulated the establishment of a National Commission for Transitional Justice, adopting effective and consultative mechanisms focusing on victims' rights, holding officials accountable, ensuring the right to know the truth, achieving justice for victims and survivors, and honoring martyrs."
He continued: "On May 17 of the current year, in a new step confirming the Syrian leadership's commitment to the transitional justice process, Decree No. 20 of 2025 was issued to establish the National Commission for Transitional Justice as an independent entity with legal personality, financial and administrative independence, carrying out its tasks throughout the Syrian Arab Republic."
He further stated: "Having been entrusted with the presidency of the commission by the decree, forming the working team, and establishing the internal regulations, I declare my full commitment to diligent and persevering work to implement this assignment, fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people in all their components, by uncovering the truth about the serious violations committed by the defunct regime, holding those responsible for these violations accountable in coordination with the relevant authorities, compensating the victims, as well as establishing principles of non-repetition and enhancing national reconciliation.
The head of the National Commission for Transitional Justice emphasized that justice in Syria will not be retaliatory but based on revealing the truth, accountability, punishment, preventing impunity, and consolidating the rule of law. He stressed that this commission will be an effective platform for justice for victims, honoring them, commemorating their memory, compensating them, leading to comprehensive national reconciliation that preserves the dignity of all Syrians.
