The main train station in Hamburg witnessed a shocking incident on Friday when a 39-year-old German woman launched a knife attack on passengers during the evening rush hour, resulting in 18 injuries, including four in serious condition.
German police confirmed that the suspect suffers from a clear mental illness, and she was immediately arrested at the scene without resistance, with an investigating judge ordering her to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
Authorities denied any political motives, drug or alcohol influences during the attack, considering it as an individual act. The federal police in Hanover explained that the attack occurred in front of a stationary train, targeting station passengers aged between 19 and 85.
Four platforms at the station were closed during ongoing investigations, while social media circulated a video showing the moment of the suspect's arrest.
This incident comes amid a wave of violent attacks in Germany in recent months, prompting security to be a top priority for authorities.
Footage showed an intensive presence of police and criminal police at the scene of the attack, where the wounded were treated and transported to hospitals. Investigations are still ongoing to uncover the full details and circumstances of the incident.
