Hamas announced yesterday, Thursday, that it is holding extensive consultations with Palestinian factions and forces regarding a proposed ceasefire in Gaza supported by the United States, confirming that it will deliver the final decision to the mediators after the end of these consultations, and will announce its position officially.
In a parallel development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel's acceptance of a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, indicating that Tel Aviv is awaiting a response from Hamas.
During his inspection visit to the kibbutz settlement, which witnessed the largest kidnapping operation during the October 2023 attack, Netanyahu pledged to release all hostages, saying: "There are still 20 hostages alive, and we will bring them all back."
The proposed agreement includes a 60-day ceasefire with a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces and a significant increase in humanitarian aid to the sector.
An Israeli official said that the United States and the mediators will provide guarantees for negotiations aimed at ending the war, although Israel has not officially committed to this in the current agreement.
Reports indicate that the deal includes the release of 10 out of 20 living hostages and 18 out of 30 deceased hostages in 5 stages during the ceasefire period, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
If Hamas agrees, Israel and Palestinian factions will enter into indirect talks to determine the details of the Israeli withdrawal and a timetable to end the conflict, according to Israeli sources.
It is worth mentioning that the war between Israel and Hamas, which lasted 21 months, witnessed several attempts to cease fire that did not last long, including an initial ceasefire that lasted only a week in November 2023, followed by a second ceasefire in January 2025 that lasted about 8 weeks, during which prisoners were exchanged by both sides.
It was expected that a permanent ceasefire would be agreed upon in the second stage, but Israel resumed its attacks in March 2025 in order to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages.
