Germany Seeks Agreements to Repatriate Criminals to Syria and Afghanistan

German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, revealed contacts with Syrian authorities to discuss the possibility of reaching an agreement allowing the repatriation of "Syrian criminals" to their homeland, indicating that the results "have not yet been clarified".
This came in statements made by Dobrindt to the German magazine "Fox", where he pointed out that Syria still poses a challenge in repatriation operations. This step comes after previous initiatives by the former Interior Minister, Nasie Vizer, who initiated contacts with the Syrian transitional government before leaving office.
In a related context, Dobrindt seeks direct negotiations with the Taliban to facilitate the deportation of Afghan criminals, saying: "There is still a need for third parties to hold talks with Afghanistan. This cannot always remain a solution... I imagine that direct agreements must be reached with Afghanistan to facilitate repatriation to the homeland".
It is worth noting that Germany has not carried out any deportations to Afghanistan since the Taliban took control in 2021, except for one operation in August 2022 that involved the deportation of 28 Afghan convicts to Kabul.
On the other hand, Dobrindt called for reducing the number of refugees accepted in Germany, considering that the annual number should be "much less than 200,000". He explained that 600,000 asylum seekers were registered in the past two years, in addition to 1.2 million Ukrainians, saying: "Therefore, the theoretical maximum of 200,000 is no longer feasible today, from today's perspective, this number would be excessively high".
