German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced yesterday, Monday, that Germany will establish a humanitarian airlift bridge with Jordan to transport aid to the Gaza Strip, amidst the worsening hunger crisis affecting the population.
Merz stated in a press conference from Berlin that Defense Minister Boris Beistorious will coordinate this mission in close collaboration with France and Britain, both of which have also expressed readiness to establish a similar airlift bridge to deliver food and medical supplies.
Earlier, the Spanish government revealed its plan to drop 12 tons of food aid over Gaza this week.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, known for his sharp criticism of the Israeli military campaign, announced during a press conference that this operation will take place on Friday, departing from Jordan, using aircraft belonging to the Spanish Air Force.
Sanchez said: "Famine in Gaza is a disgrace to humanity as a whole, and ending it is a moral responsibility that cannot be postponed."
The Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed that this operation follows what happened in March 2024, when Spain dropped 26 tons of food aid to Gaza.
In contrast, a statement from the Ministry of Health in Gaza revealed that the number of deaths due to hunger and malnutrition has risen to 147, including 88 children.
Hamas reported on July 21 that more than two million people in the region are at risk of famine due to the ongoing Israeli blockade. According to the movement, over 650,000 children are facing severe malnutrition.
Since March 2, 2025, no international humanitarian aid has entered the Gaza Strip, as all crossings remain closed by Israeli authorities.
Food is currently being distributed through the "Gaza Humanitarian Fund" system, an international mechanism managed by Israel and the United States.
The Ministry of Health in the region announced that over 900 Palestinians have died while trying to obtain aid through this system.
Hamas accused Israel of using the blockade and starvation as a means of genocide, and called on the international community to take immediate action to end the blockade imposed on the region for over 21 months of war.
