The Director General of the Syrian Grain Organization, Engineer Hassan Mohammed Al-Othman, said today, Thursday, that the organization operates according to a dual strategy to secure wheat by supporting local production and addressing shortages through imports, to ensure market stability and achieve food security for citizens.
The official news agency "SANA" reported Al-Othman as saying that the quantities of wheat available in silos and mills are sufficient for several months, noting that the organization is implementing a regular wheat supply plan to meet the country's needs and ensure the continued availability of the material, and it is in the process of soliciting new offers soon to supply about 200,000 tons of wheat.
Al-Othman announced the receipt of 372,000 tons of wheat from farmers this season, and pointed out that Syria's annual need for wheat reaches 2.55 million tons, which necessitates continuous efforts to cover the gap between local production and actual consumption by importing wheat from exporting countries such as Ukraine and Romania, as part of the state's efforts to enhance national food security.
He confirmed that all shipments of imported wheat have been financed from the state's own resources, and their prices were paid immediately upon receipt, without any overdue financial obligations towards the supplying companies.
