U.S. President Donald Trump announced yesterday, Friday, that the United States will host the G20 Summit in 2026 in Miami, Florida, confirming that the event will take place at the "Trump National Doral Miami" resort that he owns.
Trump expressed his happiness at the selection of Miami, indicating that the location is the "best place" to hold the summit, affirming that "each country will have its own building" at the resort.
In his press statement from the Oval Office, Trump confirmed that he would not benefit financially from the event, saying:
"We will not make any money from this at all. We are making a deal that will not involve money. I just want things to go well."
This statement comes after years of accusations against Trump and his family of increasing their wealth during his two terms in office.
Trump added that the main reason for choosing the resort is that most hotels in Miami are fully booked in December, making his resort the most suitable option to host the event.
Trump, who moved to Florida as his primary residence, had sought to host the G7 Summit at this resort during the beginning of his first term (2017-2021), but later backed down following corruption allegations.
He also had retracted an invitation to Russia to attend that summit due to its suspension from the G7 following the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Regarding the G20 Summit in 2026, Trump confirmed that he would welcome the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite global political tensions. Trump said: "I would be happy if they wanted to attend, but they would be observers, and I’m not sure if they want to attend in that capacity."
It is worth noting that Russia and China are members of the G20.
On another note, Trump announced that he will not attend the G20 Summit scheduled for November 2025 in South Africa, criticizing the South African government in previous statements for "persecuting whites."
He stated that he would send Vice President JD Vance to represent the United States at the summit, saying: "I won't go, JD will go. He’s a great vice president, and he’s looking forward to it."
The world is currently anticipating preparations for this summit, which is expected to be a significant diplomatic event in contemporary political history.
