In an ordinary morning at an elementary school in Daejeon, South Korea, moments of tranquility turned into a horrifying nightmare. A teacher in her forties, who had recently returned from a "mental" break, committed a crime that shook the entire community: she brutally stabbed an 8-year-old student to death! The little girl, unaware that her last day would be in a place supposed to be safe, was participating in after-school care. However, in the audio-visual room on the second floor, the atmosphere turned tragic. The teacher, who had been receiving treatment for depression since 2018, viciously stabbed the child, leading to her later death in the hospital due to severe bleeding. Days before the incident, the teacher had displayed aggressive behavior towards one of her colleagues at school, raising questions about her mental stability. Nevertheless, she returned to work in December after a long leave, with no one expecting her story to end in such a tragic manner. After committing the crime, the teacher attempted to end her own life, and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the police began investigations to determine if the crime was premeditated, and what were the true motives behind this shocking act. The incident caused deep shock in South Korean society, with parents and visitors flocking to the school gate to place flowers, dolls, and messages of condolences, expressing their grief over the loss of an innocent child. South Korea's acting President, "Choe Sang-mok," ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need to review school safety standards to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. The question now arises: How can a school transform from a safe place into a stage for a horrific crime? And what drove a teacher, supposed to be a source of safety and education, to commit such a heinous act? The story still awaits answers, but it remains a stark reminder of the importance of caring for the mental health of both teachers and students in an increasingly pressured and complex world.
