Israeli occupation police evacuated several towns near Jerusalem today, Wednesday, as forest fires rapidly spread in the area, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to request assistance from Greece.

Israeli police and media reported that towns about 20 kilometers west of Jerusalem were evacuated, while firefighting teams rushed to contain the fires.

Speaking from the National Fire Service headquarters, Netanyahu instructed officials to establish communication channels with Greece and other countries in case international assistance is needed.

Netanyahu said, "We do not know how these fires will develop," calling for strict measures to extinguish them. He added, "They simply cannot reach Jerusalem." He continued, "Of course, we defend the communities within the city's range," saying he "will prepare reserves from other countries like Greece."

Greece faced a series of devastating forest fires last year, including a massive fire that forced thousands to flee their homes and reached the outskirts of Athens before being brought under control.

Wildfires broke out near Jerusalem this Wednesday morning in wooded areas amid a severe heatwave.
