In a striking statement reflecting a potential shift in Russian-American relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin described his American counterpart Donald Trump as "the light at the end of the tunnel" for the deteriorating bilateral relations between the two countries.
During his participation in an event in the city of Sarov, located 370 kilometers east of Moscow and known as a major center for the Russian nuclear weapons program since the late 1940s, Putin said:
"Our relationship with the United States has reached its lowest point since the end of World War II, but with President Trump's return, I believe there is finally light at the end of the tunnel."
Putin praised Trump's leadership qualities, emphasizing that he hopes the initial steps of his administration will pave the way for a "complete restoration" of relations between Moscow and Washington.
He also revealed that discussions are underway between Russian companies and "American partners" regarding new cooperation opportunities, especially in the fields of liquefied natural gas, through the Arctic and the state of Alaska.
In a related context, there are signs of complications regarding the Ukrainian issue despite Trump's previous calls to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in a recorded interview with the "Meet the Press" program on NBC that there are no plans for a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a proposal that Trump had suggested in an attempt to end the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war for over three years.
Commenting on this proposal, Trump previously said that trying to bring Putin and Zelensky together is like "mixing water with oil," referring to the difficulty of reconciling the positions of both parties.
These statements come at a time when the international arena is cautiously watching the future of the war in Ukraine and the potential rapprochement between Moscow and Washington under the new Trump administration.
