In a new escalation of the Ukrainian-Russian front, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv witnessed a series of violent explosions early this morning, coinciding with intense Ukrainian attacks on areas controlled by Russia in the Donetsk region, while Moscow responded by announcing the downing of 42 Ukrainian drones within hours.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the air defense forces intercepted and destroyed the drones between 8 and 11 pm Moscow time, over the airspace of several Russian provinces.
As a result, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency imposed temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft at four airports, namely Nizhny Novgorod Airport (Strigino), Tambov Airport (Donskoye), Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, and Kaluga Province Airport in western Russia, as part of measures to ensure the safety of civilian air travel.
On the Ukrainian side, Ukrinform agency reported explosions in Kyiv, coinciding with the activation of air raid sirens in the city and several other provinces such as Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad, with reports of explosions heard in Kryvyi Rih.
Meanwhile, Denis Pushilin, the head of the "Donetsk People's Republic," announced the death of four people and the injury of seven others due to Ukrainian attacks targeting the Petrovsky and Gorlovka areas using drones, confirming material damage to a residential building and a school, with medical care provided to the injured.
In an additional statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense clarified that it downed five more drones within two hours, three of them in the Bryansk province, and one each in Smolensk and Kursk, indicating the continuation of defensive efforts against repeated air attacks.
The recent escalation comes within a continuous wave that began in early July 2025, with Moscow intensifying its attacks on vital infrastructure inside Ukraine, while Kyiv continues to target areas inside Russia with drones, amid a state of political and military deadlock that complicates the prospects for de-escalation or reaching a peaceful solution in the near future.
