In an urgent health warning, British authorities have announced the spread of cholera in the country after several citizens were infected with the disease from drinking contaminated holy water brought from a famous well near the Ethiopian-Sudanese border. The well, known as "Barmel Georges," is believed to have strong healing and spiritual powers, as the locals believe in its ability to cure diseases and ward off evil spirits. However, what seemed to be a source of healing has turned into a serious health threat! Four Britons were infected with the dangerous disease after consuming this water, with one of them being transferred to intensive care. Tests revealed that the water was contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant strain of cholera bacteria, making treatment more challenging. It was found that one patient drank the water directly during a visit to the well, while another brought bottles back to Britain and shared them with friends and relatives, leading to local transmission of the infection, even reaching Germany where three others were infected after exposure to the water or its spray. Investigations continue into this alarming incident raising concerns about the possibility of waterborne diseases making a comeback, which had disappeared since the 19th century thanks to modern water and sanitation systems in Britain. Cholera, causing severe watery diarrhea that can lead to death within hours if not promptly treated, has resurfaced. British health authorities recommend that doctors monitor cases of acute diarrhea in patients of Ethiopian origin and inquire about their consumption of imported holy water. Awareness campaigns have been previously launched in Ethiopia since the beginning of 2024 to warn people of the risks of consuming untreated water, even if it is considered sacred. This incident highlights the risk of disease transmission through religious or tourist trips, emphasizing the importance of health awareness and necessary precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
