The Turkish First Lady, Emine Erdogan, today, Saturday, sent a message to Melania Trump, the wife of U.S. President Donald Trump, urging her to contact Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to encourage him to intervene urgently to stop the suffering of children in the Gaza Strip.
Emine Erdogan explained that her initiative was inspired by the message Melania recently sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding children affected by the war in Ukraine and Russia. She said in her message: "I believe that the great concern you have shown for 648 Ukrainian children... will extend to Gaza as well."
Erdogan added that the world is witnessing a collective awakening regarding the Palestinian issue, emphasizing that Melania's call for Gaza would be a "historical responsibility towards the Palestinian people," especially in light of the growing international calls for the recognition of the State of Palestine.
In a related context, a global hunger observatory announced that the city of Gaza and its surrounding areas are officially suffering from famine, amid warnings of its expansion.
This report has increased international pressure on Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the report, describing it as "outright lies," affirming that Israel follows a policy of preventing famine, not causing it.
