Reuters quoted six sources today, Thursday, as saying that SpaceX and two other partners are leading candidates to win the contract to build a crucial part of the "Golden Dome" missile defense system sought by U.S. President Donald Trump. The sources added that Elon Musk's rocket and satellite company is collaborating with Palantir Technologies and Anduril Industries in an attempt to build key components of the Golden Dome, which has attracted significant interest from the thriving base of defense technology startups. In the executive order issued on January 27, Trump pointed out that a missile attack is "the most catastrophic threat facing the United States." The founders of the three companies supported Trump's decision, with Musk donating over a quarter of a billion dollars to assist in Trump's election campaign and serving as a special advisor to Trump to manage efforts to reduce government spending as the head of the Government Efficiency Management Office. Despite positive signals from the U.S. Department of Defense regarding SpaceX, some sources confirmed that the decision-making process regarding the Golden Dome is still in its early stages, and its final structure and who will be selected to work on it may change significantly in the coming months. According to sources, the three companies met with senior officials in the Trump administration and the Pentagon in recent weeks to present their plan, which may include building and launching between 400 and over 1,000 satellites orbiting the world to detect and monitor missile movements. The sources mentioned a separate fleet of 200 armed attack satellites armed with missiles or laser beams that will intercept "enemy missiles." They added: "It is not expected that SpaceX will participate in arming the satellites." In response to these reports, the Pentagon stated that it will provide "options to the president to make decisions in line with the executive order and White House directives and timelines."
