Deputy Prime Minister: Cambodia Will Nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, Sun Chhay, said today, Friday, that his country will nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, following his direct intervention in halting the recent border conflict with Thailand.

In response to a text message confirming Cambodia's intention to nominate Trump for the award, Chhay said, "Yes."

In a statement to reporters earlier in the capital Phnom Penh, Chhay thanked Trump for bringing peace and said he deserves the nomination for this award.

At least 43 people were killed during the violent clashes that lasted five days and displaced more than 300,000 people in Cambodia and Thailand.

Chhay, who is also Cambodia's chief trade negotiator, said, "We appreciate Trump's great efforts for peace," adding that his country is also grateful for the reduction of U.S. tariffs to 19%.

Washington had initially threatened to impose a 49% tariff, which was later reduced to 36%, both levels that would have devastated Cambodia's vital garment and footwear sector, Chhay said in an interview with Reuters earlier on Friday.
