The Sudan Doctors Network announced the death of 13 children during the past month of June in a camp for displaced people in the town of Ad Daein in East Darfur state, due to severe malnutrition and food shortages, amidst repeated attacks by armed groups on the camp.
The network said in a statement on Tuesday that the camp houses more than 7,000 displaced people, mostly women and children, and expressed serious concern about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions there.
It called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to urgently provide food and basic healthcare to the displaced, as well as to secure the camp and ensure aid reaches without obstacles.
With the Rapid Support Forces controlling East Darfur and three other states in the region, in addition to the siege of El Fasher city for over a year, the area faces a dire humanitarian crisis.
In a related context, the General Coordination of IDP and Refugee Camps in Sudan warned of the humanitarian situation collapsing in Darfur, noting that residents are resorting to eating "ambaz" (animal feed) to survive, while some even lack access to this source.
The coordination also reported the spread of cholera in the Tawila area in North Darfur state, with 2145 cases recorded including 40 deaths, as well as 23 cases and 7 deaths in the Golo area in Jebel Marra in Central Darfur.
Cholera is also spreading in the camps of Kalma, Attash, and Alsalam in South Darfur state, with water contamination and lack of sanitation.
The coordination called on all parties to immediately cease fire and open urgent humanitarian corridors, appealing to the United Nations, World Health Organization, and humanitarian organizations to urgently conduct air drops of aid to the affected areas.
This comes amid ongoing clashes between the army and Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher city since May 2024, despite international calls to stop the fighting and allow aid to reach the largest humanitarian operations center in Darfur.
