The Damascus Governorate affirmed today, Thursday, that the speculations circulating on some social media platforms regarding the ongoing works on the slopes of Mount Qasioun are inaccurate.

The governorate explained in a statement published on its Telegram channel that the rehabilitation works on the public road known on the top of Mount Qasioun, with a length of 960 meters, are in compliance with safety and public tourism standards. These works are in harmony with the nature of the mountain to maintain its majestic appearance in the eyes of the capital's residents and visitors. The primary focus is on the security and comfort of visitors and the safety of the residents on its slopes.

The governorate confirmed that based on reports and the expertise of competent engineers and the work and report of the assigned technical committee, the works include comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation of old informal settlements by removing the old foundations that were based on dilapidated barrels and cracked floors prone to collapse on the residents. The rehabilitation includes the building known as "Lamontana," and the restoration is being carried out for a facility that has been standing for many years without adding floors or changing its use, indicating that the wooden struts seen are for reinforcement purposes only.

According to the governorate, the works also include the implementation of retaining walls and structurally studied concrete roofs to maintain construction safety standards, reinforcing the western rocky pieces with an 80-meter-long concrete wall to protect visitors from collapses, as well as providing free public and touristic seating areas.

The works also involve improving the traffic infrastructure and constructing a two-story garage to ease the pressure on surrounding roads, establishing a modern drainage network to divert floods and connecting it to the city's network to protect the slopes from erosion and collapses, in addition to rehabilitating a safe and efficient electricity network, public services, and health and medical facilities, and adopting a drip irrigation system to collect excess water and prevent soil erosion according to the statement.

The Damascus Governorate emphasized that official entities are the only reliable source of information and that the project is a rehabilitation project according to the aspirations of the residents, within the latest means of comfort, safety, and entertainment, in harmony with the environment and nature. It noted that the prepared investment sites will be announced later through public tenders to ensure transparency and achieve the highest quality standards.
