The Allianz Arena in Munich hosted the final of the fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League last night, Sunday, June 8th, which saw Portugal and Spain face off in an exciting match that ended with Portugal winning 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in both regular and extra time.
This was the first final between the two national teams in a major tournament and witnessed dramatic fluctuations in the score.
Spain opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, before Nuno Mendes equalized for Portugal in the 26th minute.
Just before the end of the first half, Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead with a goal in the 45th minute, becoming the first player to score in two different finals of the tournament.
In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer in the 61st minute, raising his international tally to 138 goals in 231 matches, continuing to enhance his record as the top scorer and appearance maker in history, in addition to scoring his fourth goal against Spain in 10 matches.
The match remained level in both extra halves, with neither team managing to secure a win, leading to a penalty shootout.
Portugal's players successfully converted all their penalties, while Spain missed one, resulting in a 5-3 victory for Portugal.
With this win, Portugal reclaims the UEFA Nations League title, which they first won in 2019, confirming their strong presence in continental tournaments and setting their sights confidently on future challenges with their veteran generation led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
