New York State joins Texas in banning the DeepSeek application on government devices
The Wall Street Journal reported that New York State has decided to ban the artificial intelligence application DeepSeek on government devices, following days after Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a similar order banning the use of DeepSeek and the popular TikTok alternative RedNote, making Texas the first state to ban Chinese applications.
Since its launch on January 15, 2024, DeepSeek has dominated the market by outperforming OpenAI in terms of performance and cost, leading to a trillion-dollar drop in technology stocks, causing panic on Wall Street.
The application faces similar security concerns to those that prompted U.S. authorities to ban TikTok, as it has been downloaded over 2 million times since its launch, collecting and storing American user data in China. Under Chinese laws, local companies are required to share their data with the Chinese government upon request, raising concerns about unfriendly entities accessing sensitive information about American users.
