The Freedom Flotilla coalition, a non-profit international organization, stated that one of its ships left the Italian port of Catania today, Sunday, heading towards the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid after a previous attempt failed due to a drone attack on another ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Volunteers including climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham sailed aboard the ship "Madelaine," carrying what the organization describes as "limited but symbolic" amounts of relief supplies. Another ship belonging to the organization named "Konstantina - Global Conscience" was attacked by drones near Malta's territorial waters in early May. The organization held Israel responsible for this attack. Israel has not responded to requests for comments. Thunberg told journalists at a press conference before departure, "We are doing this because no matter the difficulties we face, we must continue to try because the moment we stop trying is the moment we lose our humanity." She added, "No matter how dangerous this mission is, it does not compare to the danger of the world's silence in the face of genocide." The Freedom Flotilla coalition stated that the journey "is not a charitable act, but a direct and peaceful move to challenge the illegal Israeli blockade and escalating war crimes." The United Nations stated on Friday that the situation in Gaza has reached its worst level since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) 19 months ago, despite the resumption of limited aid. Under increasing global pressure, Israel ended an 11-week blockade on the sector, allowing limited operations led by the United Nations to resume.
