The chairman of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Paulo Pinheiro, said today, Friday, that the UN report is important for justice for the victims and for pushing the government to accountability.
In statements reported by "Syrian Television", Pinheiro emphasized the need for the government to move forward in establishing transitional justice.
Pinheiro confirmed that there is no significant difference between the government report and the UN report, pointing out that the two reports complement each other and the government has the tools to act urgently.
He added that the government is responsible for verifying human rights violations, affirming that the government has accomplished what was requested of it in cooperation with the member states of the UN committee.
Pinheiro said: "We met with a group from the government and authorities with the support of the government itself," and noted that it is important for the government to scrutinize the employment of members of the new security apparatus.
