The city of Jaramana in the countryside of Damascus is witnessing cautious calm today, Sunday, March 2, after several security incidents that occurred during the past two days between local factions and the public security forces affiliated with the interim government, intensified by "Israeli" statements pledging to defend Jaramana.
According to local sources, "Sheikh Laith Al-Balous and Sheikh Suleiman Abdul Baqi, along with a number of factions from Al-Suwayda, arrived in Jaramana. Negotiations took place between them and the interim government, and the Druze sheikhs pledged to hand over those involved, seeking to contain the situation."
Tensions began on the evening of Friday, February 28, following a brawl between a group of Qublan family members from Jaramana and others from outside the city in the Swords Square, resulting in the injury of a member of the first group who was transferred to Al-Mujtahid Hospital in Damascus.
At the hospital, verbal altercations occurred between the injured's companions and public security elements, escalating into a physical altercation that ended with the security detaining the companions and transferring them to the Salhiyah section. Simultaneously, conflicting news and rumors about the incident spread, escalating tensions in Jaramana, where local groups mobilized within the city and reactivated checkpoints at its entrances.
Tensions increased after reports reached Jaramana of a delegation from the city being shot at in the Muhajireen area while heading to address the issue of detaining the injured's companions.
Amid the charged atmosphere, a dispute occurred at the Arch checkpoint, one of Jaramana's entrances managed by one of the local groups, between checkpoint personnel and two individuals in a military vehicle. According to the Ministry of Interior statement, the two individuals belong to the Ministry of Defense. The dispute quickly escalated into an exchange of fire, resulting in the death of one individual and the detention of the other.
Another local group besieged the city's police station, recently activated by the Ministry of Interior with the approval of social and religious figures in the city. The group expelled the station's personnel after disarming them.
Jaramana is located 3 km away from the center of the capital Damascus and is predominantly inhabited by Druze, which establishes close ties with the province of Al-Suwayda.
