In a tragic incident that shook the Moroccan public opinion, a family party held on Sunday evening in the city of Zaio, near Nador in the north of the country, turned into a health disaster after some of the guests consumed a traditional candy containing sharp glass shards.
The incident resulted in 16 people being injured to varying degrees, including three cases described as serious.
The victims showed immediate symptoms after consuming the candy, including bleeding in the mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, and internal pain, necessitating urgent medical intervention.
They were transported to the nearby Zaio hospital for initial treatment, while three cases were transferred to the Hassan II Hospital in Nador due to the severity of their injuries.
Local authorities and security forces immediately launched an investigation under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor's office to determine the source of the glass in the candy and how it reached the guests' table, amid questions about negligence or the possibility of criminal intent behind what happened.
The incident sparked a wave of anger and outrage on social media, with many considering it "a crime that cannot be just a coincidence", and some pointing fingers at the party that prepared the sweets or supplied the food.
Activists called for a comprehensive investigation and not to tolerate anyone involved in what happened, demanding stricter control over confectionery shops and food suppliers during social events, especially weddings.
Moroccans expressed their shock at the incident, calling for holding those responsible accountable regardless of their status, emphasizing that people's lives should not be held hostage to negligence, fraud, or reckless actions.
