Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Prevot announced in a statement on Tuesday his country's intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York this month, in a move that reflects the increasing international support for the Palestinian cause.
Prevot stated in a post on the "X" platform (formerly Twitter) that "Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly meetings," also emphasizing that the Belgian government will take firm steps against Israel, including imposing "strict sanctions" on the Israeli government, in response to the escalating situation in the region.
This move comes after French President Emmanuel Macron announced last July France's intention to also recognize the State of Palestine during the General Assembly meetings in New York, scheduled from September 9 to 23.
More than 12 European and Western countries have also confirmed that they will follow the same path, in a move that could represent a significant shift in the positions of Western countries towards the Palestinian issue.
This political development highlights the increasing international pressure on Israel and reflects a tangible change in European policy towards the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
