"The suffering has lasted longer than it should".. King of Belgium condemns violations in Gaza

King of Belgium described Israel's violations in Gaza as "a disgrace to humanity", in unusual direct statements regarding international affairs from a king who usually avoids involvement in public policy.
In a speech at his palace in Brussels today, King Philippe said, "I add my voice to all those who condemn the serious humanitarian violations in Gaza, where the innocent die of hunger and are killed by bombs while they are besieged".
He added, "This situation has lasted longer than it should. It is a stain on the forehead of all humanity. We support the call of the UN Secretary-General to end this protracted crisis immediately".
This is the first time King Philippe has spoken publicly in such a sharp and clear tone about a conflict, while the Belgian federal government has been more reserved in its criticism of the situation in Gaza.
The role of the king in Belgium is limited to providing advice, support, and warnings to the government without making any political decisions.
Israel has been attacking Gaza since October 2023. Since then, health authorities in Gaza said that Israeli forces have killed over 59,000 Palestinians in the region.
Israel has destroyed vast areas of the territory and imposed restrictions on the entry of food and other supplies.
