Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed the U.S. special envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, that Israel is interested in negotiating with the new Syrian government under U.S. mediation, as reported by the American website "Axios" citing Israeli officials. The website quoted a senior Israeli official as saying today, Wednesday, that "Netanyahu is interested in negotiating a new security agreement and working towards a comprehensive peace agreement," adding: "When Barrack met Netanyahu last week, the Israeli Prime Minister told him that he wants to capitalize on the momentum of the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to initiate negotiations with Syria through U.S. mediation." The official also mentioned that Netanyahu's goal is to try to reach a series of agreements, starting with a new security agreement based on the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with some modifications, and ending with a peace agreement between the two countries. The Prime Minister believes that al-Assad's openness to building close relations with the Trump administration provides a diplomatic opportunity. The official said: "We want to move forward towards normalization with Syria as soon as possible." According to the official, Barrack informed the Israelis that al-Assad is open to discussing new agreements with Israel.
