Austria is preparing to deport a Syrian man whose asylum right was revoked due to a criminal conviction, described by an official in the European Union and human rights groups as the first forced deportation from Europe to Syria since the fall of the former regime.
Human rights groups are concerned that Austria's plan may set a precedent encouraging other EU member states to follow suit amid rising anti-migration sentiments across the 27-country bloc.
Roxandra Staiko, the legal advisor of the 32-year-old refugee who was granted asylum in Austria in 2014, stated that he lost that right in February 2019 due to his criminal record. She refused to specify the nature of the convicted case.
The Austrian Interior Ministry has not yet responded to a request for comment.
