The French capital, Paris, witnessed riots and widespread arrests during and after Paris Saint-Germain's victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final, which took place on Saturday evening in Munich.
The French police faced riots and tensions on the Champs-Élysées and near the Parc des Princes stadium, where a group of troublemakers caused chaos and set off fireworks, leading security forces to intervene, restore order, and arrest dozens of those involved.
In a statement on the "X" platform, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed that "thugs provoked the police, while the real audience enjoyed watching the match on television," after Saint-Germain's 5-0 victory to claim their first European title in history.
In Munich, organizers of a public festival scheduled at the Olympic Park were forced to close it hours before the final match due to severe overcrowding, after allowing around 20,000 spectators to watch the game on a giant screen, while others later sneaked in due to the absence of security barriers.
Moreover, a brawl broke out between the fans of both teams at the University metro station in Munich, prompting the police to intervene using pepper spray, despite no major injuries being reported.
In addition, the metro train service was temporarily halted, causing some fans to arrive late at the Allianz Arena stadium, with no official reason given for this stoppage.
Traffic on the roads leading to the stadium sometimes came to a standstill due to the heavy presence, but no major issues were reported after the match as fans left at different times.
