In a new development that may revive hope for the resumption of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, American negotiator Steve Weinberg is scheduled to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the Omani capital, Muscat, next Sunday to discuss Iran's response to the latest American proposals. This meeting comes after widespread controversy and uncertainty about whether the sixth round of talks will actually take place, despite five previous rounds described as positive since they began on April 13th. At the same time, a new Russian initiative has emerged aimed at facilitating negotiations between the two sides, especially regarding the uranium enrichment issue, a major point of contention between Washington and Tehran. While Iran sees enrichment as a sovereign right that cannot be relinquished, the US administration insists it crosses red lines. In an interview aired on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump expressed his dwindling confidence in Iran's readiness to halt uranium enrichment as part of a potential nuclear agreement, a key condition for him. Conversely, Abbas Araghchi expressed some optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement, indicating through his "X" platform account that Trump's rejection of Iran possessing nuclear weapons does not contradict the Iranian position, but may serve as a starting point for building mutual understanding. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran is currently enriching uranium up to 60%, a level far exceeding the 3.67% maximum limit stipulated in the 2015 agreement. This point remains the core of the primary conflict in any future negotiations. All eyes are now on Muscat, which may witness a decisive round between the two parties after months of tension and deadlock.
