A memorandum published online today, Monday, showed that the administration of US President Donald Trump has delisted "Jabhat al-Nusra", which was based in Syria, as a foreign terrorist organization.
The memorandum is dated June 23 and was issued by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a preliminary version of the federal register, set to be officially published tomorrow, Tuesday, and will take effect as of that date.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the matter.
The US State Department website reported in a press statement dated June 30 last year that Pompeo said: "I will consider the potential full comment of the Caesar Act, take all appropriate actions regarding the classification of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as a foreign terrorist organization, review its classification as a global terrorist, in addition to classifying Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism. I will also explore ways to ease sanctions at the United Nations". He added: "Today's actions represent a new chapter for the Syrian people in their quest to build a safe, stable, and successful future".
