The United States is currently experiencing one of the largest measles outbreaks in the past decade, with reported cases in Texas and New Mexico reaching 370, an increase of 19 cases since the last report four days ago. The health department in Texas stated that in the county of Jeans, the current outbreak center, cases have risen from 211 to 226, with the outbreak starting in late January. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the total number of cases in these two states this year has exceeded the cases recorded in the same period last year, which was 285 nationwide. New Mexico added one case since March 21, bringing the total cases to 43, mostly in Lea County adjacent to Jeans County. Texas reported 18 new cases, bringing the total cases in the state to 327. Dr. Tammy Camp, a pediatrician in Texas, mentioned that controlling the outbreak will take a long time due to some people refusing to get vaccinated, making it difficult to contain the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement on March 7 confirming that the risk of widespread measles outbreak in the United States remains low. While health authorities are struggling to curb the measles outbreak, the importance of vaccination remains crucial in combating this disease that has resurged strongly after years of control.
