In a new American step towards the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the US State Department announced yesterday, Thursday, its approval to fund the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" with $30 million. The organization, which provides humanitarian aid in the war-torn region, is controversial.
Tommie Beugott, Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized that this move is part of the efforts of US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to push for peace in the region, stressing the importance of supporting institutions that play a humanitarian role in times of crisis.
This contribution marks the first direct financial support provided by the US government to the foundation, despite its long-standing political support. The foundation coordinates relief operations through American logistics companies, notably "Save Rich Solutions," led by a former CIA officer, in addition to a security company affiliated with it known as "U.G. Solutions," which employs former American soldiers to provide logistical protection and distribute aid in so-called "safe sites" within Gaza.
The US State Department called on other countries to follow suit and contribute to supporting the foundation to ensure the continued flow of humanitarian aid to affected civilians, at a time when the region faces immense challenges due to ongoing blockade and bombardment.
The nature of the partnership between the foundation and these security and logistics companies raises questions in human rights and diplomatic circles, especially with increasing criticism of the growing privatization of humanitarian aid and its reliance on entities with a military nature.
Despite the controversy, Washington sees this funding as a tool to enhance stability in Gaza through "neutral" channels, away from the control of any political faction, according to unofficial statements from American officials.
This move is expected to lead to further international actions _ whether in support or criticism _ within the ongoing debate on the role of external parties in managing humanitarian aid in conflict areas.
