In a new shift reflecting the rapid impact of artificial intelligence on the job market, Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, revealed that the company expects a decrease in office employees due to the adoption of advanced artificial intelligence applications.
Jassy explained in statements reported by the German news agency (DPA) that the company will need fewer employees to perform some traditional office tasks, while new opportunities will arise in other jobs as technology evolves.
Amazon globally employs around 1.5 million workers, including about 350,000 office employees. However, the company does not intend to carry out widespread layoffs as in 2022 and 2023, but aims not to fill some vacant positions.
Jassy clarified that Amazon is investing in developing so-called "AI agents"; intelligent programs capable of performing independent tasks such as summarizing information from the internet, writing programs, translation, and automating time-consuming tasks.
He added: "AI agents will be work partners we can rely on in different stages of our work," urging employees to experience AI technologies to enhance productivity.
It is worth noting that the impact of artificial intelligence on the job market has become a global concern, as companies like Spotify and Duolingo have announced plans to replace some jobs with AI capable of performing tasks efficiently.
Amazon, on the other hand, continues to invest billions of dollars in developing advanced data centers that support AI technologies, as part of plans to automate costs up to $200 billion, equivalent to 35% of its e-commerce revenue.
