President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of stalling and buying time to continue the war against Kyiv, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of upcoming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, after phone calls with both Putin and Zelensky. Trump emphasized that his lengthy third call this year with Putin achieved a "breakthrough," despite Russia not making any concessions and continuing to reject Kyiv's proposed 30-day ceasefire. In contrast, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that Trump did not offer any concessions to Moscow, stating that the US administration is committed to not compromising on the Ukrainian issue. Russia, on the other hand, proposed working on a "memorandum" outlining a roadmap to end the war, as it makes military progress on the ground, strengthening its negotiating position. Zelensky expressed readiness to consider Russian proposals, although he lacks precise details about the "memorandum." The war that broke out in February 2022 is ongoing, having destroyed wide parts of eastern Ukraine, with Russia currently controlling about a fifth of the country's territory. In a related context, Zelensky welcomed the new sanctions imposed by Britain and the European Union, targeting over 200 vessels from the Russian "shadow fleet," and called on the United States to join this increasing pressure on Moscow. Trump hinted at the possibility of opening new trade prospects with Russia after the war ends, raising questions about his future policy directions.
