As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel, the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority announced today, Friday, June 13, the temporary closure of the kingdom's airspace and the suspension of air traffic for all incoming, outgoing, and overflying aircraft, as a precaution against any risks that may arise from the escalation in the region.
Chairman of the Authority's Board of Commissioners, Haitham Misto, stated in a press release that the decision was in compliance with international agreements for the safety of civil aviation, including the Chicago Convention, aiming to protect the safety of air traffic and passengers. He emphasized that the decision will be continuously reviewed based on the situation's developments and risk assessment, with the Authority keeping airlines informed of updates promptly.
In the same context, the Jordanian Government's Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson, Mohammad Momani, emphasized that the kingdom has not and will not allow its airspace to be violated and will not be a battleground for any conflict. He stressed that national security is a red line, and endangering the safety of the kingdom and its citizens will not be tolerated. He called on the international community to press for de-escalation and prevention of further escalation.
Meanwhile, a responsible military source stated that the Jordanian Armed Forces General Command has placed all formations and units on high alert to address any potential threats to the kingdom's security and stability amid the military escalation in the region. The Armed Forces are at the highest levels of operational readiness, logistics, and alertness, ready to deal with various circumstances, emphasizing the importance of not succumbing to rumors and relying solely on official statements.
Reports indicated that Iran, Iraq, and Israel have also decided to close their airspace amidst increasing military tensions following Israeli strikes targeting facilities inside Iran. Images showed smoke rising from damaged buildings in Tehran due to Israeli airstrikes, with an Iranian Revolutionary Guard deputy commander announcing that all Iranian military capabilities are on full alert. An Iranian security source confirmed that Tehran plans a painful response to the Israeli attack.
The United Arab Emirates strongly condemned Israel's targeting of Iran, expressing deep concern about its repercussions on regional security, calling for restraint and avoidance of escalation. The U.S. Secretary of State warned Iran against targeting American interests or personnel, amid signs of the region entering a highly dangerous phase of open military confrontation.
