SAMS Medical Team Performs 60 Surgeries in Deir ez-Zor During 3-Day Visit

A medical team affiliated with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) performed over 60 surgeries across various specialties at the National Hospital in Deir ez-Zor during their three-day visit.
Dr. Youssef Al-Satam, the Director of Health in Deir ez-Zor, informed the SANA agency that the medical team's visit, consisting of 13 doctors, followed the society's first international medical conference in Damascus last week. He stated, "The team assessed the health situation in the province, conducted medical examinations in hospital clinics, and performed 60 surgeries, including 30 endoscopic procedures."
The team's activities, which concluded yesterday, also included a medical workshop involving doctors from the National Hospital and other healthcare institutions. Al-Satam explained that the surgeries and medical examinations covered gastrointestinal, thoracic, and cardiac specialties, emphasizing that the team identified the healthcare needs in Deir ez-Zor and will work to enhance cooperation for healthcare development.
Dr. Asaad Jbeir, an anesthesiology consultant with the SAMS team, described the medical situation in Deir ez-Zor as "painful," highlighting the urgent need for support, especially given the shortage of medical staff, such as the reliance on only one anesthesiologist.
Jbeir stressed the importance of supporting medical specialties in universities, expressing the commitment of the SAMS team—which includes Syrian doctors residing in various countries—to assisting Syrian provinces, including Deir ez-Zor, facing significant healthcare challenges.
It is worth mentioning that SAMS is a non-profit humanitarian medical organization founded in 1998 by Syrian-American doctors, aiming to provide healthcare and medical education in Syria and neighboring countries, especially in crisis-affected areas.
