A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the Drake Passage off the southern coast of Chile this morning, Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The agency stated that the earthquake occurred at 10:16 PM local time on Thursday (02:16 AM Friday GMT), at a depth of 10.8 kilometers below the Earth's surface.

Despite the intensity of the earthquake, the agency confirmed that there is no threat of tsunami waves in the area, alleviating concerns about its impact on nearby coastal regions.
