Al-Fasher city in the Darfur region of western Sudan witnessed a devastating wave of violence yesterday, Saturday, due to artillery shelling carried out by the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in the death of 17 people and the injury of 25 others, according to local medical sources.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that "the number of dead transported to the hospital reached 17, in addition to 25 injured, while some families buried their dead in their homes without going to hospitals due to the deteriorating security situation," according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
At the same time, the Abu Shouk displacement camp north of Al-Fasher was subjected to similar artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces, according to what was reported by the "Abu Shouk Camp Emergency Room," which confirmed the fall of several casualties, without disclosing precise numbers.
These attacks come amid the ongoing siege of the Rapid Support Forces on the city of Al-Fasher and its surrounding camps since May 2024, with an increase in the pace of shelling after the Sudanese army regained control of the capital Khartoum and several other cities in recent months.
The repercussions of this conflict have not been limited to human losses alone, but have also caused massive waves of displacement, especially from the Zamzam camp, which housed hundreds of thousands of displaced people, as the recent attacks forced the camp's residents to flee and leave their homes.
This shelling comes amid a devastating war that erupted in Sudan since mid-April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced, amidst a severe humanitarian food crisis and a catastrophic outbreak of cholera, the worst in years.
