A source in the mining sector and a source from civil society said today, Friday, that at least 12 people were killed in a collapse at a coltan mine in the North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The sources mentioned that dozens fled the mine when it collapsed on Thursday. The reasons for the collapse are not yet clear.
The small mines surrounding the town of Rubaya, where manual labor is carried out, produce about a sixth of the world's coltan supplies, which is essential for the production of smartphones and other electronic devices.
Reuters quoted officials from the rebels as saying: The March 23 Movement has been controlling the area since mid-2024 and imposes a 15% tax on the value of coltan production.
