In a wide-ranging airstrike today, Sunday, Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with drone missiles, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a one-year-old infant, and injuring 11 others, according to Ukrainian authorities.
A thick column of smoke rose from the roof of the Kyiv Cabinet building, in a scene that marks a new escalation in the Russian air campaign, although it is unclear whether the building was directly attacked.
The head of the Kyiv city administration Timur Tkachinko confirmed that the child's body was recovered from the rubble by rescue teams, highlighting the extent of the destruction caused by the attack.
It is worth noting that Russia had so far refrained from targeting government buildings in the heart of the capital, making this attack a significant escalation.
On the political front, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his rejection of the presence of Western forces in Ukraine, considering that these forces would be a legitimate target for his country's army, amid the ongoing war that has entered its fourth year.
At the same time, recent efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to halt the conflict that has lasted for more than three and a half years have not resulted in any tangible progress, leaving the crisis unchanged and tensions in the region escalating.
