The City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications in Egypt has announced the discovery of a new type of fungi belonging to the genus Trichoderma.
The new fungus has been identified and officially registered as Trichoderma egyptiacum. The City of Scientific Research explained that this discovered species represents a promising opportunity for use in both biofertilization and biological control against plant pathogens.
The Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour, emphasized that this discovery represents a scientific achievement showcasing the capability of Egyptian scientific research institutions to contribute to the development of global knowledge, support applied research aimed at addressing agricultural and industrial challenges, enhancing food security, and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
Younes Rashad, the Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Desert Agriculture Research in the City and the discoverer of the new fungus, explained that the genus Trichoderma is widely used in agricultural, industrial, and medical fields, serving as the basis for over 50% of global fungal biological control products.
